Does Food Make You Sick?

Food makes me nauseous

Are you feeling strange after you eat some kinds of foods? Do you get itchy or feel funny in your hands?  Are you getting hives or swelling up? If so then may be you having a good allergy. This is very common  and many people go through the same problems that you may be experiencing with many different foods.

Overview

It’s estimated that over 12 million Americans suffer from food allergies. Most allergic reactions are mild, but around 30,000 visits to the emergency room are reported each year because of the reactions. As many as 200 deaths each year are attributed to food allergies.

Studies report up to 8% of children have an allergy to some type of food. The numbers are slightly smaller for adults, only around 4%. Many children will outgrow their food allergies. But some will carry these allergies into adulthood and suffer from them their entire lives. Eating prepackaged foods, out in restaurants or even friends homes can cause problems. It’s often hard to tell what’s added to the foods we eat.

You hate to ask the cook "what’s in this?", but sometimes you just have to. Especially when asking can mean the difference between an enjoyable meal and a trip to the emergency room. With the increased cases of peanut allergies, most packaged foods have started including on the label the use of peanut oils and even if the processing of nuts is handled in the same factory.

The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to know and avoid foods that cause signs and symptoms. For some people, this is a mere inconvenience, but others find it a greater hardship.

Allergy's Favorite Symptoms

If allergies had a top ten list of their favorite symptoms what would be on it? Would they prefer life-threatening or just really annoying?

The most common symptoms, that may or may not be on their favorites list:

1. Breathing problems

Swelling or narrowing of your throat or the airways to your lungs can cause wheezing. It can also result in shortness of breath because your lungs can’t hold as much air when they are affected by swelling or mucus buildup.

2. Burning, watery or itchy eyes

It happens when your body overreacts to something. The immune system makes antibodies that cause your eyes to release histamine and other substances.

3. Runny Nose

It can be caused by anything that irritates or inflames the nasal tissues. Infections such as  — allergies and various irritants.

4. Coughing

Mucus associated with allergens tends to be more watery than the mucus your body produces when you aren't sick or experiencing allergies.

5. Diarrhea

Even a tiny amount of allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction is known as anaphylaxis.

6. Skin Rashes

Food allergy rashes are caused by ingesting foods you’re allergic to. Your immune system treats the proteins in the food as harmful substances and tries to fight them. Even trace amounts can lead to an allergic reaction.
